Detroit rookie defensive tackle NDAMUKONG SUH credits having uncommon agility for a man 6-foot-4, 307 pounds to his days playing soccer as Portland youth before focusing solely on football by the time he entered Grant High School.
Sunday against the New York Jets, SUH called upon those skills in a different way by filling in for injured kicker Jason Hanson for an extra-point attempt.
Hanson injured his knee during a field goal attempt earlier in the game when he was hit by a Jets rusher who was flagged for roughing the kicker. The injury left Hanson unavailable after a third-quarter Lionstouchdown that gave them a 13-10 lead.
So, SUH was called upon to kick and just missed as the ball hit the right upright. The missed point proved crucial later when the Jets tied the score at 20 each and eventually won the game with a field goal in inovertime, 23-20.
SUH grew up playing soccer and helped the defense win a field-goal kicking competition in training camp. But he wasn't pleased with his effort Sunday on the extra point."I need to be ready at all times," SUH told the Free Press. "I practice it. Just didn't execute."
The Lions come in at No. 28 in these rankings but could have played relatively well this season and could cause trouble for several contenders down the line.
